(sorry for the long wait)
Cora pulls out her quarterstaff and swings
to hit= 19 (do I need to roll for both sides? if so my second was a natural 20 so the damage would be 12 instead of 4) damage = 2/4 "I'm sorry Mr.Spider but you bit my friend..."
question! I was going to cast Shillelagh on my quarterstaff... if I had could I still have swung?

If you try to take 2 attacks without the right feats you will take massive penalty's (-6/-10) on your attacks. Do you want to take 2 anyway or just the 1?And no you could not have attacked if you cast that spell.

My quarterstaff does damage with both ends... or so the description said... did I misunderstand?
I intend to only take one attack... new stuff is hard...

My quarterstaff does damage with both ends... or so the description said... did I misunderstand? I intend to only take one attack... new stuff is hard... I believe that it lists damage for both ends cause it can be used as a double weapon like a...(/digs out 3.0 PHB...)...two-bladed sword or orc double axe. So you didn't really misunderstand, you just didn't have all the information. Like redshirt said, if you have the right feats (two-weapon fighting and the like) then you could make two attacks easily, but it takes a lot of feats to get to that point.

Ahh... ok... I see... thanks for the info... it was just the one attack roll and damage roll then... I believe that was an attack of 19 and damage of 2... ;D now I know what feats I should think about taking later on..

Cora rushes the spider and with a mighty swing of her staff spins the spider around. Unfortunately it is now facing her, much to Thoril's relief.
The spider hisses at her. Poison drips off of its fangs as it lunges at the creature that hurt it. With a deft spin of her staff Cora deflects the spiders attack. Angrily it skitters back a few feet and contemplates its next move.
Kanir?

Power attack for 2, 16 to hit...
Kanir lunges forward, his weapon spinning around him with practiced, deadly precision. With a faint grunt, he lifts the falchion high above his head, reverses the blade, and slams it home point first.
That's how Kanir rolls--stabbing with a slashing weapon! Oh, 14 damage assuming that mighty blow landed.

Cora cringes in anticipation of Kanir's mighty blow/stab making contact.
"Poor little spider..."

Kanir's blade drive's through the spider and bites deep into the floor beneath. It's legs spasm for a few seconds before they fall still. The only movement is the quivering of the blade.
Everyone gets 50 xp. What do you want to do now?

Thoril uncorks the vial. A spicy aroma fills his nose as he takes a drink. As the liquid enters his body he can feel the venom leaving. He is whole again.
Poison is gone. Now what?

"Let's finish searching this room," says Kanir, wiping spider innards from his blade. "And be careful! I, for one, would prefer not be stung by any spiders...or worse."
search=18 And I think we need a refresher on the layout of the area we're in, if you don't mind.

You move up the hall to the right hand door. When you reach it you see that it is slightly ajar. With a quick push you swing the door open to reveal a 15 x 20 room. There is a fireplace in the southwest corner. 2 dirty windows on the east wall let in dim light with an occasional flash of lightning in the distance. Two stuffed armchairs stand near the fireplace of this room. The covers of both have been torn or cut and the stuffing has been pulled out; however, the wooden frames are still intact. The pieces of a broken table lie on the floor near the north wall. The only place in this room you have not searched is the fireplace. As you examine the fireplace you find nothing on the outside but when you check out the inside you find a loose stone about 3 feet up the chimney. It easily pulls out to reveal a small box. It is locked.

Cora turns to Kanir with a wide grin. "Would you like to smash it open or shall we just try to pick the lock?"

"Neither of you know how to open it?" Kanir asks. "Very well, but be aware that this could damage the contents..."
Assuming there's no other way to open it, Kanir will smash it. What kinda roll do ya need, str? str=9 dammit!

The box is not very sturdy and yields easily to Kanir's efforts. Inside the only contents are a ring.
Maple.

"Mmmm... maple. Oh! A ring!" Cora takes the ear ring from her pocket to see if it matches the ring in the box. "Maybe they were part of a jewelry set?"

Kanir mutters the incantation of one of the first spells he ever learned, detect magic. He's heard of magical rings before, and while he doubts that such a treasure would be kept in such a paltry container, you can't ever be too sure.
Let's just see, he thinks as he finishes the spell, waiting for but not really expecting the tell-tale glow.
Kanir can cast detect magic, and a few other 0-lvl spells for free up to 5 times a day, so that's why I jumped on it. Thoril and Cora should save their spells for blastin'! ;D

Cora compares the earring to the ring but they do not match.
When Kanir finishes uttering the spell you see the ring begin to glow. It does indeed have some magical properties.

Hold on there, Tex! What kind of aura is the ring radiating? (I will wait for 3 rnds, a whole 18 seconds, to find out...) Hmm, I thought it gave school of magic, too. Oh well. I guess it really doesn't matter; I have no problem with Thoril trying it on.

"Wait--!" exclaims Kanir. Too late.
Damn sorcerer is going to get himself killed, Kanir thinks. His concentration broken, Kanir looks on anxiously, surreptitiously loosening his falchion in it's scabbard. Just in case...

When Thoril puts the ring on his finger invisible arcane runes suddenly glow a brilliant blue and slowly fade away. With a pulse a faint shimmering field envelop him for a second before it too fades from sight. The magic activated, the ring now appears normal.
