Cora looks to her companions and gives a slight shrug. "Well I don't see any signs of goats... or bears.... just bugs and rodents. You guys find anything?"

"Nothing," says Kanir, impatient to be done with this silly mission. "Let's move on. Come on, Thoril."

Do you want to do anything else in this room?

Kanir doesn't, but Thoril found some books, so I assume that he might. Waiting for Thoril...

Inside the third volume you find a sheet of parchment obviously torn from a larger sheet. On it are a few lines of handwritten text in the common tongue. It has been spoiled by the damp so that only two words are still legible:
".....beyond skeletons....."
The books are worth 150 gp each in a large city. When you leave the room which way do you want to go?

Cora peers over Thoril's shoulder... or rather, under his elbow... trying to see the books. "What are those? Anything about goats?"

Having seen this kind of thing before, Kanir decides that maybe this mission won't see so pointless after all.
"I think maybe we'd better worry about skeletons, Cora," Kanir says. "That includes goat skeletons," he adds before she can reply.
It's probably nothing, but maybe this mansion is haunted, Kanir thinks. So much for an early exit...
I'll help Thoril carry whatever books he wants, and then let's go through the...west door? The one at the end of the hall, the left one. search=16 spot=12 listen=5 init=4

Cora ponders Kanir's words for a moment. "Well, I don't know about you guys, but I'd rather fight skeletons than ghosts. And if there are goat skeletons so much the better!" She happily skips along behind Kanir looking for any signs of skeletons.

This room is 20X30
The door opens to reveal a large bare room. You see a fireplace directly across from the door. A door in the North wall obviously leads outside. In the southwest corner is a small pile of refuse.

"What is this sudden fascination with goats?" asks Kanir, stuffing the last of Thoril's books into his pack. "You've always been more interested in squirrels and rabbits and, well, the more fuzzy of the woodland animals."
Kanir looks around the room.

"Frankly, I find your new obsession to be a little unhealthy," he says.
"Just do me one favor," Kanir says as he turns to look down at Cora with a serious, almost pleading expression in his eye. "In the unlikely event that we do happen to run into a goat, please don't ensorsel it. I can't stand the thought of traveling with a goat."

Cora looks down at her feet and kicks at the dust on the floor. "I've never seen a goat before. And the whole wicker thing intrigued me..." with a heavy sigh and the use of hand quotes where appropriate she adds, "I promise I wont 'ensorsel' any goats." When Kanir isn't looking she makes a face at him and thinks to herself, "One goat wouldn't be enough anyway... I'd need a whole army!"

As you wander about the room an evil voice seems to fill the area.
"Welcome, fools - welcome to your deaths!" followed by a prolonged burst of insane and fiendish laughter.
I need everyone to make me a will save.

As the laughter fills the room you are all gripped by fear. Cora and Thoril dig deep for the courage to stand their ground, but Kanir is overcome and turns and runs from the house.
Kanir is unable to tell if its a spell or something supernatural. He will be unable to re-enter the house for 4 rounds.

The fireplace is empty. In the pile of trash you find a large gold earring worth 20 gp.
Kanir can reenter the house but does not want to go into that room.

Kanir runs screaming from the house, filled with fear such as he has never felt. He runs towards the cliff outside, gripped by such terror that he never even realizes that he dropped his falchion...
"...back in the house," Kanir says. He suddenly comes to his senses, finding himself about to leap off the cliff into the sea below! His toes curl inside his heavy boots as he stops himself at the brink of oblivion, eyes wide and arms pinwheeling.
"Gods above!" he hisses. He pulls himself back from the brink, heart hammering, breath blowing like a bellows. He staggers back three steps, and then bends over, hands on knees trying to calm himself.
It takes only a few moments to steel himself to re-enter the house. He stands back up, and, spine straight, marches back towards the front door. He is still reluctant to enter the mansion.
They're never going to let me live this down, Kanir thinks to himself with a sigh.
