Ghosts, thinks Kanir. I hate ghosts.
"What's this about ghosts?" Kanir asks the serving man. "I certainly hope there aren't any here in the inn."
Kanir has never actually seen a ghost, of course, but he's heard about them, and what he's heard...it isn't pleasant. A young rogue he used to run with told him a story about his brother, how the brother entered a haunted house to take care of the undead problem. The found him the next morning tied to the gates of the house, sword clutched in his hand, his face a dessicated mask of terror. Kanir wanted nothing to do with ghosts.
Give me a flesh and blood enemy, any day, thinks Kanir. If it can bleed, I can kill it. And ghosts don't bleed.

"No need to worry." Hoskin laughs. "There are no ghosts here, but we have plenty of spirits. Galen has been telling ghost stories about Mistmoor Manor for 10 years. I think he just does it to get travelers to buy him drinks."
Hoskin's jovial expression is momentarily replaced with a serious look. "But Mistmoor Manor makes my skin crawl. Something is not right about that place. No one in these parts goes near it."
With a wave of his hand Hoskin says "Bah, tales to frighten children. If you need anything else let me know." He turns and heads toward a nearby table, shaking his head to drive the story away.
Your group turns its attention to the meal at hand, enjoying the company of your party members. You would be happy indeed if you did not occasionally see Hoskin glancing at your group with a worried look.

Plenty of spirits, thinks Kanir. Typical lame innkeeper joke.
Kanir turns his ear towards Galen and the other nearby farmers, trying to overhear anything they might say about ghosts, Mistmoor Manor, or any adventures to be had.
He ignores Thoril's suggestion about spending the night in a haunted house...

Give me a listen check please.
You strain to hear any information over the din of the crowd. They seem to be talking about Galen. If you could just hear them........

The noise of the prevents you from hearing what is being said at the farmer's table. What ever they said was quite amusing judging from the laughter. Conversation soon changes to more mundane topics as you hear bits and pieces about the weather.

Chuckling at the inkeepers joke Cora asks with an eager longing in her voice, "Can we? I've never seen a ghost before... or a wicker goat.. wow..." (listen check= 28)

My listen check was 11 Im gonna stroll over to them. Well met locals, my name is Thoril, and I was trying to listen in on your conversations, and I would like to hear more about this "haunted" manor. (pulls up a chair and sits in it backward arms folded on the backrest.)

Now what the hell is he doing? thinks Kanir. That crazy sorcerer is gonna get me in another fight.
Kanir glances at his falchion, and then over towards the table that Thoril just intruded upon. Shouldn't need my blade. He looks over at Cora, and can almost see her thought processes. With a frown and a sigh, Kanir prepares to cast color spray. Just in case.

Excited by the sudden venture of her friend Thoril, Cora jumps up and runs over to the table. "And don't skimp on the parts about the ghosts!!" She pauses a second and adds, "And where the heck are the wicker goats?" To herself she thinks "drat, I should have asked more about the reward..."

The farmers stare at Thoril and Cora in stunned silence for a good 6 seconds, then burst in laughter. Wiping tears from his eyes one of them says, "If you want tales of the Manor you need to talk to Galen. He's the one who claims to have been inside. Most people don't go near that old place. Hell, it's been abandoned for 20 years." Slyly looking at his companions with a grin he lowers his voice and with a wink adds, "Thats when they say Nevil Mistmoor disappeared."
An old fisherman nearby slams his tankard on his table. "Laugh if you want Tom Miller, but I've seen strange light's in that house. A man sees strange things on the ocean, but that house is unnatural!"
"Gus, theres no such thing as ghosts. Save your sea tales for the tourists. " says Tom
"Then why don't you prove it and earn the reward from the Council."
Tom looks at his friends, "Uhhh......mmmmm.......I've better things to do than waste my time looking for ghosts. Come on fellas we have to go."
With that a slightly dejected looking Tom gets up with his snickering friends and leaves the bar.
"Ayup, thought so.", says Gus as he watches them go.

Kanir relaxes a little bit when it becomes obvious that the locals aren't interested in fighting his friends. And even though Kanir knows for a fact that ghosts do, indeed, exist, this mention of a reward piques his interest.
No telling what we'll have to go through to get it, though, he thinks. Kanir decides to stay put and let his companions handle the negotiation. For better or worse...

The room seems to quite down a bit with the departure of the farmers. Gus sits back in his chair, sucking thoughtfully on his pipe. He turns to some fellow fishermen when their conversation turns to best bait to use this time of year.
Galen finishes his drink and stares into his empty mug.

"Are there really ghosts in Mistmoor Manor? And what's this reward I've heard so little about?" She motions to Thoril and Kanir to come closer. Frowning slightly she adds, "I guess there probably aren't any wicker goats involved... but I've never seen a ghost either so I guess that's ok. It will still be interesting." She smiles expectantly as she awaits his answers.

"Yup theres ghosts in that house, and worsh...worse. I seen 'em. Out huntin', mindin' my own bidness i was. All of a shudden a doozy of storm rolls in." A serving girl sets a fresh pint in front of him. He licks his lips and takes a pull.
"Seeinz as how the Manor was the only cover around I went in the back door. A lil ways down da hall was a door to da kitchin. Now seein that make me a mite hungry. So i'se got in ma bag for sumpin ta eat."
"Now nuttin helps a meal do down like a bit o sumpin ta drink. So I looks around an seen a door that led to sum stairs. I thinks that those High Falootin people keep wine in da cellers. I'll just go see if'n theres any left."
"I hardly get a few steps down when I hears this scream. It sounds like its comin from everywhere. I look down the stairs and seez glowing eyes lookin up at me. Well I donts need to tell you I got out of there just as fast as I could."
"The Town Counshill is offerin a reward of 100 gold for proof that the House is not Haunted, but aint no one gonna get it cuz theres sumpin Evil in that house. Mark my words. You go in that house an your as good as gone!"

When Cora calls him, Kanir heads over to the table to hear Galen's story.
"I think you were seeing a different sort of spirit, friend," says Kanir after listening to the drunkard's tale. "The scream you heard was most likely an animal trying to warn you away from it's lair. And many different sorts of creatures besides ghosts have glowing eyes."
Kanir realized that he sounded like he was trying to convince himself more than townsman Galen.
Nonsense. I'm just interested in this reward. My purse has been a little light of late.
"Now, where could we find a representative of the Town Counshill--Council!"

Cora nods in agreement with Kanir. "That is true. Many animals possess eyes that would seem to glow." Sensing a subtle unease from her friend she reassuringly pats Kanir's arm. "If that's the case then I know I can help! It would be nice to have a little animal around..." she looks to Kanir and Thoril. "What do you say guys? Let's go speak with Hoskin and go get that poor little animal out of that house!" At this point she's practically jumping with excitement. "It's probably not a goat... but any animal is better than no animal. Even if there's no wicker involved."

Despite Cora's reassurance, Kanir doesn't feel much better. She means well, he thinks to himself, and rolls his eyes when he knows she can't see. He decides not to point out the unlikelihood of finding a "little" animal using the basement of the manor as a lair.
Probably goblins or something, actually. Maybe a bear; I hear they like the dark and quiet. Kanir nods to himself confidently. Definitely not ghosts.
"Don't get your heart set on any goats, Cora," Kanir says. "I doubt you'd find many in any mansions, haunted or not. And before we go running off blindly into the night, I think we should speak with Mr. Hoskin and get some details about this reward.
"And what happened to that blasted sorcerer?"

"A bear?" Cora exclaims with a squeel of delight. "I LOVE bears!" She claps her little hands and looks up at Kanir. "I do hope you're right! Bears are much more fun than goats!" The possibility of ghosts have all been forgotten. She looks around for Thoril so they can go speak with Hoskin. "I wonder if he's cast an invisibility spell on himself?" She reaches her hands out and waves them around expecting to feel an invisible Thoril nearby. "Oh what fun..." She giggles.

You wave Hoskin over and ask him about the reward.
"Yes, the Council has a standing reward of 100gp for clearing Mistmoor Manor. However they...... We... did not think anyone would ever make a serious attempt at investigating the place."
"If you you mean to go to the Manor, I implore you to wait until morning. Such a place should not be entered at night."
"I can give you rooms for the night if that is your wish."

Cora sadly shakes her head at Thoril. "100 divided by 3 is not 50 my dear, mathematically challenged friend." She looks back to Kanir then at Hoskin and yawns. "I am a bit sleepy. Prehaps we should all stay here the night and go explore that manor in the morning. I'm sure the bear will still be there another day." Thinking to herself, "I'd still like to see a wicker goat."
