"I agree," says Kanir. "Let's stay the night and investigate the Manor in the morning."
A free room for the night. Can't argue with that. Kanir pauses for a moment. Unless the inn is haunted, too...

If no one has anything else to do we will continue.
The night passes uneventfully. In the morning you have a quick breakfast and head out east of the Village. About 4 miles down the road you come upon Mistmoor Manor.
The house sits 80' from the edge of a cliff and about 70' above the water. It is dilapidated and obviously long-abandoned. A 6' high stone wall surrounding the gardens is partially collapsed, but the main iron gate is intact and open.
What are you going to do?

Cora is going to casually walk through the open gate and take a look around the grounds noting any interesting plant life.

I don't know about haunted, thinks Kanir, except maybe by bats.
Noting the location of his companions, Kanir loosens his falchion in it's scabbard and heads towards the garden wall.
Checking out the garden and keeping his eyes and ears open for the other two. 11=spot 11=search 18=listen oohhh!!

This was once a well tended garden. Ornamental flowers and sculptured shrubs have grown wild amid the weeds and vines. Signs of numerous animal habitation are obvious(rabbits, mice, voles. etc...).
The remains of a gravel path are barely visible running to the large and ornate front door. A smaller path leads around the right side of the house. The crumbling wall allows passage through at numerous places.
Dirt and grime cover the windows of the house. The few places you can see in reveals the rotting remains of furniture. Nothing seems out of the ordinary.

"The garden looks clear, you two," calls Kanir. "No ghosts or goats," he adds with a smile he hides from his companions. "I'm going to check out this cliff."
Kanir walks the 80 feet to the cliff edge and looks down, not sure what he's expecting to see.

As you head toward the cliff you see that the smaller gravel path leads around the house to a door at the rear. The crumbling stones of a well are strewn about the ground near the door.
When you get to the cliff you look over and see it's about 70' to the surface of the water. The cliff face is jagged and drops strait into the water.
As Cora investigates the house she realizes that the usual noise one would expect(insects, etc...) are strangely absent.

Just as I expected, thinks Kanir. Nothing.
He decides to head over to the rear door, and to check out the well on the way before returning to the front of the house to rejoin his companions.
Not sure how many checks you want, but I'll do one of each for door and well (in that order): spot=17, 15 search=10, 16 listen=5, 4

The well is a 5' hole about 15' from the back door. You catch a whiff of stale water as you approach the opening. A search of the well reveals nothing.
The door is heavily covered with cobwebs. The only thing your search reveals is that the latch does not appear to be closed all the way.

Cora joined Kanir at the back of the house and walked back around to the front with him to meet up with Thoril. "Have either of you noticed there are no insect sounds... no birds singing, no chipmunks chattering... and that well STINKS!" Cora crinkles her nose a little in disgust. "Something isn't right with this place."

"It's just an old house, Cora," Kanir says. "I doubt we'll find much but rats and spiders in here. Easy money. I suggest we walk right in the front door, give it a good once-over, and then return to town. After we've collected our reward, we can put this little village behind us, and find more profitable ventures farther south."
Having said all that, Kanir draws his sword. Just in case...
If everybody agrees, we'll walk right in the front door. I'll go first.

Cora reluctantly agrees with Kanir's plan all the while thinking to herself, "Something is terribly wrong with this place. I really wish it was just wicker goats and bears." Cora timidly follows behind Kanir and hopes Thoril is ok all by himself in the back. "Be careful Thoril! I fear there's something much less fun than a bear inside..."

The front door opens onto a musty, dirty entrance hall(30x30). In the middle of the left wall a corridor leads into the west wing of the house. On either side of the corridor opening the walls are bare but some pieces of wood in the corner near the window indicate that a small wooden table or chair once stood there. Ahead of you, another corridor leads towards the rear of the house.
To your right a staircase climbs to the next story, reaching it at a balcony which overlooks the hall along its north and west sides; the stairs appear safe to climb though the balcony rail is broken in several places. Under the stairs at the rear of the hall a third corridor leads east.

"Four ways to go," says Kanir. "Left, right, straight, or up the stairs. I suggest we check out the ground floor before heading upstairs."
Not that we're going to find anything interesting no matter where we look, thinks Kanir.
"Let's give this room a quick once over and then move on," says Kanir.

Cora looks around at the musty, dirty house and crinkles her nose in disgust. "Filthy. What a waste. Maybe we should work our way to the back and meet up with Thoril before getting into the rest of the house. I think it would be unwise to remain separated too long." She also agrees to search the ground level before moving upstairs.

The 5' hall heads west about 25'. You can see 3 doors. One each on the North and South wall about 15-20 feet down. The third is at the end of the hall.

The room is roughly 10x25
You can tell that this room was once a library, with bookshelves around the walls. Most of the bookshelves are broken now and in many places have come away from the wall altogether. Those few shelves still intact are empty but there is a pile of books in the southwest corner.

Cora sees lots of signs of life in the house. Unfortunately it is all insect and rodent, no goat sign.
Kanir's search of the room turns up nothing unusual.
Thoril's examination of the pile of books reveal that it contains 14 books, now covered in cobwebs, vermin droppings and mold. The names of the spines show that most of them are mundane (histories, poetry, etc....) but 3 might be of interest. They are:
The Magical Properties of Gemstones by Mage Tenser The Magical Properties of Herbs and Flowers by Mage Tenser The Metaphysics of Mathematics by Mage Nystul
