November is coming up again. Check your calendar, it'll be here in less than a month! What does that mean? Well, November happens to be National Novel Writing Month. NaNoWriMo for short. Check my sig: you'll see a dorky little banner proclaiming that I participated in and completed the challenge last year. That's right, I wrote a 50,000+ word pile of crap called The Golden Man. It sucks. Sure, I'm proud of parts of it, but it sucks. It's definitely not fit for public consumption. That's not the point, though. I'll be "competing" in this challenge again this year. No idea what I'll write (well, maybe a tiny little idea...), but that's not the point, either. The point is, I challenge all of you to join me in the quest to bang out 50k words. They don't have to be good words. In fact, I'm sure they won't be good words. And really, they're not supposed to be good words. Just words. If they make sense, so much the better. Nobody reads what you've written unless you want them to. (And, by the way, if you accept this challenge, I'll show you mine if you show me yours.) Here's the link if you're interested. If you enjoy writing, or even think you might enjoy writing, check it out. All of you have awesome imaginations, and there are several of you that I think are excellent story-tellers. Nobody judges what you actually write, just that you write it. And yeah, 50k words in a month is intimidating, but it's supposed to be. That's part of the fun! ;D BTW, I'm dragonface72 on the NaNoWriMo site. In case you're curious (I might post excerpts this year). So anyway, join me in this challenge if you dare! I'm going for 60,000 words this year! (And if you don't accept the challenge, at least offer me some encouragement...please...) (And if you have questions, I'll be happy to answer them, of course.)

I might be interested... I like writing... and 50K words isn't that much... is there an upper limit or is it just a lower limit?

50k is the lower limit. More than that is a personal challenge. And if you write 50k words in a month with a job and a kid, you are officially awesome!
Check the link and dig around. If you're into writing, you might find some good advice on the forums.
(And you don't even understand how cool I will think you are if you accept this challenge!)

I need to get my creative side back online (so to speak) so I've decided to accept this challenge... it will require, however, that I obtain a new keyboard.... (darn thing keeps skipping letters)... I've kind of had an idea bouncing around in my head anyway... ;D and what the heck, I work at a computer, I can write during my breaks! I needed something to do during those boring times anyway... haven't even been taking my breaks this month...

You go, y'all!!! I've never been much of a creative writer but admire that you have that talent. (And tell xombie to stop eating crackers and stuff around the computer. Gettin' crumbs and all kinda vile stuff down in the keybord and all.) Also, not on topic, could you ask him a question for me? WHEN ARE WE GOING TO GET TOGETHER AND PLAY SOME OF THAT SWEET, NEW TALISMAN GOODNESS?

Very nifty. I had seen your banner and was curious. Don't suppose we can just cheat and throw up something we've already written that long huh? No, guess that would kinda defeat the point. lol
I will have to do some thinking on this but perhaps this might be something to get my writing butt in gear so I do more than just pump out shorts. You said sharing is optional correct? Don't suppose you know how this would effect the rights on said finished work? Nvrmd, I'll just comb their site and see myself. Thanks for the info though, it looks fun.
Good luck to both Ixos and Gir, I'm sure your both going to do fantastic.
Ok, just gonna edit this one instead of posting another. After reading through the site I've decided why not. So I'm in. My username is gypsymullo....of course. See you all at the finish line, hopefully. ;D

You rock, gypsy!
Now I guess I'll be forced to post excerpts...
Is anybody besides me and these ladies man enough to accept the challenge? (Heh.)

grrr, ok I take that back, my username is gyspymullo, (with the s and p switched) didn't realize I had mixed the letters up until today when I couldn't log in. Thats what I get for typing fast and not paying attention I guess. Seems I can't change it via editing my account either, looks like I'm just stuck with it. lol

Heh, I made the same typo; added you as a buddy before you mentioned the s before p. Weird.
What's your NaNo name, Gir? Is it Gir? Hmm, I'll check...
Last night, I read my story from last year. A lot of it wasn't bad--at least, not as bad as I thought it was. It got a little...difficult...near the end (not-so-good writing, and I had sort of written myself into a corner), but still not too bad. I just hope I can do as well this year. I better since I'm going to post excerpts!
From the bottom of every page on the site: Hope that's official enough.

Thanks Ixos. Yeah I went through all the faq's, decided that would be easier than asking you a million questions. lol I also found out I can change my username during the off season but not right now, so I'll just be gyspy for a couple months. *shrugs* oh well. It is funny that you made the same typo though, great minds mess up alike or something like that. ;-)

Guess I better start playing with my account... what was my name? I think I just made it simple and used my actual name... yeah, that's what I did... just RachelWare... *sigh* I wasn't feeling very spontaneous at that particular moment... or maybe I was using all of my spontaneity up on signing up... I dunno

Trying to post on the nano site, and it's like super slow. I have somewhere between 1500 and 1700 super-crappy words. Think I'm done for tonight. I'll try to do more tomorrow. And I know I promised excerpts, but if the nano site is gonna be a bitch like this, I might not be able to deliver. Good luck to gypsy and Gir!

I was curious why it didn't show your word count so far, guess that explains it. Its rather slow here as well, so don't feel all alone. ;-) Also, as far as the excerpts, while I would greatly enjoy reading them, I won't tar and feather you if you can't produce em, although Gir might. lol Good luck to you both. So far I have 2115 but haven't written yet today so that will change shortly. This is very fun so far though, keeps me from overthinking the story line and characters, thanks again for the info, Ixos.

Didn't get much done tonight, but my allergies/asthma/evil disease is kicking my ass. Maybe up to 2000 words, but not sure. Hopefully the doctor will give me better drugs on Monday and I can start cranking out some story!
(Sucks cause I really like to smoke when I write, but if I can't breathe, I really can't smoke. Dammit. Looks like I'm gonna have to quit anyway. DAMMIT!!)

Bad Ixos, bad. lol Its ok, I feel your pain. I have stopped and started so many times I can't count them all. You just lasted longer than most if I recall correctly. I do hope you get to feeling better either w/ or w/o the cigs though.

BTW how do you get your word count on that site? I gave up and just used the word count my writing program generated... it's small, but I just started... and I stuck a little bit of writing up there for view... if you're interested.

Check the FAQ, it'll tell you how to verify your word count at the end of the month. Until then, the count on your program ought to be good enough. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to add you as a buddy (author search is still down, dammit!), so it might be a while before I can read your excerpt. I'll post something as soon as I write something worth reading. Don't worry about the small word count; I'm behind, too, about halfway to where I need to be.

Oh, here's a link to my profile, since author search seems to be down: www.nanowrimo.org/user/160177There may be excerpts in the future, but not right now... (Gir, could you link your profile, please? So I can add you as a buddy.)

well... I don't think I'm going to make it... I still lack about 45,000 words or so.... oh well.... I just don't have time for hobbies anymore.... having kids sucks....

Yeah, me too (cept for the kids part...but I'm pretty sure that having kids does indeed suck, which is part of the reason that I have none...). And the fact that it's past the due date. I just couldn't get into it this year. That makes Ixos a sad panda.

There's always next year, I guess. And actually, who says I have to wait that long? Maybe some day I'll just sit down and become a famous writer!
Or maybe not.
