I was supposed to do this yesterday, but when I got home I was tired and lazy. Sorry about that.
Anyway, ig and I went to the Night Below Prerelease at Valhalla's Gate yesterday. Unlike ig, I had done no preparation for this tournament; I knew a little, like some of the figs in the set, but not what they do. It's a prerelease, and I didn't really care if I did well (not exactly true, I always want to do well at a tournament, but winning was not as important for me as it usually is). ig on the other hand had been looking at the message boards and had formulated something of a plan. Or as much of a plan as one can have for a sealed event.
Oh, I got the Frostfell Rift map pack not too long ago, and was going to use one of those maps since I hadn't played on them yet. Once we got there, I decided that Hailstorm Tower would be my battleground.
The poster for this set, you know it shows all the figs in the set, has the Drow Outpost map on the back. OH! I must have it! Unfortunately, the guy in front of me got the last one. Sigh. Well, I'll have to check eBay. (I can get it at Paizo, but I'm not paying $15 for one map.) (And I think I heard somebody refer to it as Droutposter. Heh.)
After sitting around waiting, we finally get to open our packs. Neither ig nor I got a Large Gold. Oh well. My team ended up as the following: (btw, since it's sealed we ignore faction)
Hobgoblin Marshal (com 1)
Shadow
Drow Enforcer
Babau
Greater Barghest
Aspect of Loviatar
200 pts exactly. Neat. I also opened a Cerebrilith, and almost played it, but at 65 pts it was just too much (I would have had a team of 4 hitters with no commander or tech, and so opted for the bigger team).
The Aspect of Loviatar would obviously be my titan, but she seems kind of fragile for a titan. Her damage output is phenomenal (a possibility of 75 dmg on a full attack against living enemies), but her AC of 21 means she'll take hits, and with a level of 9 and my com1, I figured I didn't want her having to make too many morale checks. I really liked the looks of the Barghest; for 35pts, he can deal 30 magic/rnd, has 70hp and 20AC, DR5, and has disguise self. Better yet, he's a LE outsider--go Team Pit! Babau looked similar; 29pts, but not as good as Barghest in any area. Melee Sneak Attack looked good, though. I figured the Shadow would be Babau's best friend (F8 and incorporeal, should be able to flank things). The Drow has conceal 6, riposte and SR, and I figured he would be most useful as a psychological weapon. The Hobgoblin was the only commander I opened (and I got 2 of em). At the time, I didn't realize what a killer his Motivate would be. I was more worried about his crappy AC16 (really bad for LE), and the fact that his CFX only works on goblins.
The other rare I opened was Raistlin Majere! Sweet! I didn't play with him, but I maybe should have. That would have been neat from a story perspective--the rest of my team is evil, and Raist is LG/CG...foreshadowing!
(Oh, I'm not going to link to every mini, but if you want to look at them, here's the gallery, and here's a link to the warband generator, which should have stats if you need em.) Or, it looks like you can go here for both at the same time...
Round 1, Kim, Large Shadow Dragon, Lifeleech Otyugh, Cerebrilith
I win map, and I'm looking at her army of large and amazingly ugly critters wondering what I'm going to do to beat them. Not knowing the stats of anything, I decide that I'm going to take out her dragon first; dragons are never good news. We converge at the central VAs, and it's then that I figure out how my team works: Aspect of Loviatar cast ripping pain on the dragon, who obediently failed the save. He died quick (paralysis). My Hob Marshall used motivate on Loviatar, letting her move 6 and get within range of the Cerebrilith. She then full attacked him, killing it in two rnds. The otyugh fell shortly afterwards. All Kim managed to kill was my Shadow.
I later overheard her talking with her boyfriend/husband, complaining about Loviatar. Heh. (And later on, I swear I heard somebody refer to her as "Asskicker of Loviatar." Double heh.)
1-0
Round 2, ig2000, dammit, Dire Tiger, 2x Greater Barghest, Prisoner/Halfling combo
Why do I always play my friends at these things? I mean, there were 16 people total for this tournament! Oh well. ig had told me about his warband and his combo (the Prisoner gives double victory points when it is on a VA with an attendant, and the Halfling Tombseeker can search a VA for 5 victory points every turn; this combo will net ig 25 vps a round! I decided that I was going to have to stop him from doing that to me.) Luckily I won map, and so the VAs would be easy to defend; ig had Teleport Temple, the naughty, evil, wicked Teleport Temple. Thank the gods I wouldn't have to deal with that! We both ran for the VAs, and my Barghest claimed the bigger one as his own and sat there, invisible. ig sent his Barghests around the outside to try and take it down. Meanwhile, his Dire Tiger came running in the side, where my dudes met it and held it. I was keeping my Hobgob and Loviatar back, waiting for my Barghest to fall. It never happened, and I tore up all of ig's critters. Sorry man.
2-0
Round 3, Micah, Mind Flayer Lich, Skeletal Courser, 2x Wild Mage
Micah is an asshole. I didn't know him when we started, but when I started to write down his name to prepare to keep track of vps, he's like, "oh, you're going to keep score. I have a different plan. I'm just going to annihilate your warband." I'm like, okay, whatever. I win map, and race to the tower, the bulk of my guys going in the side way, the Babau going in the front. He brings his mounted skeleton around the front and uses mounted melee attack a couple times before Babau gets sick of it, chases him down and kills him. Meanwhile, my brave Drow takes on the Mind Flayer by himself (mainly because I ran the Barghest up there too close). Drow gets paralyzed by the MFL, but Barghest hits him a couple times (30 dmg, this is important). Meanwhile, Micah is casting spells with his Wild Mages, and keeping track of what he's cast. At least I think he is. He's using beads in some Ancient Egyptian cryptographic formula designed to confuse and annoy (in other words, I think he's cheating). His Wild Mages aren't marked or differentiated in any way, and he often looks at them with a confused expression and moves some beads around. He starts getting pissed off when he realizes that I'm beating him (which he seems to realize much later than I do), and starts cussing, saying things like "fuck you" whenever I do anything, and "I don't like you" and shit like that. It finally comes down to his lich vs. most of my guys. I have 170 victory points (he has 98), and I use motivate on Loviatar and full attack the MFL, hitting every time for a total of 60dmg. The MFL has taken 30 already (it had six beads in front of it, which I assume means 30 dmg taken with each bead representing 5dmg), and 30 +60 = 90. The MFL starts with 70. It's dead, I win. Micah doesn't seem to understand what's happening. I'm picking my guys up, and he's like "roll for init." I give him a funny look, and he goes, "just roll!" I'm like "whatever," roll a 17 and he says "okay, you win." WTF?! I won when I killed the mind flayer! Actually, I won a couple rounds ago, you stupid son of a bitch, and it's not my fault that you're having a bad day. L2P, asshole, and don't blame me cause you suck.
Sorry about that. I had to go off. He pissed me off, and I didn't go off on him there. I'm better than that.
(As an aside, I've been thinking that maybe I was wrong about how hurt the MFL actually was. I'm pretty sure my Barghest hit it twice, which is 30 dmg. What else could those 6 beads have represented? Possibly how many hit points the MFL had left? If so, and each bead means 5 hp or even 10 hp, MFL still dies when Loviatar hits it for 60.)
(And another thing, I just remembered that when he paralyzed my Drow, he was like "record that! It's going to matter, cause that guy isn't going to make his save for a while." And this yahoo can't even accurately keep track of his own shit?! Asshole. Man, I'm glad I beat this guy!)
3-0
Round 4, Casey, Lady Vol, 2x Champs of Dol Dorn
Not much to say about this round. I won map again, and bunched my guys in the tower. Casey had his guys blocking the entrance, and I thought that Lady Vol wouldn't be able to get in. There she was, big black wings and everything, and I forget she can fly. I was like, crap, well maybe Casey won't notice if I don't say anything. He noticed. Lady Vol came in and obliterated my dudes. I scored 20 vps, though!
3-1
ig didn't have such a good day. I think he ended up 1-3, but I'm not sure. Thankfully, his crappy performance didn't kill me in the final standings (jk, dude!) and I took 2nd. Not bad! I walked out with 3 more boosters (split with ig, so I got 2 of em and he got the other). I also picked up some repaints and epic cards, and the repaint Greater Barghest that all participants got. Significant minis from my prize packs include: Dire Tiger, Raistlin Majere (another one!), another Greater Barghest, and Kalashtar Bodyguard (the stats look interesting, and the sculpt looks awesome).
Anyway, it was a lot of fun, and taking 2nd makes it that much better. Everybody but my 3rd round opponent was really cool, and I'm sure I'll go to another one some time.
And, yeah, sorry about big blocks of text.
