Is it just me or are most of the people on those threads just trying to see how silly they can be? I guess i have a less exotic idea of wha the Far Realms are.

You're not wrong. Have you seen the "lemon curry" thing; some of them think it's almost required.
And a lot of these people have an unnatural hate of the Far Realm having anything to do with the Cthulhu mythos. And others seem to think that it's the plane of insanity (which it isn't; not really, anyway...).
