Ixos and I had talked about working on an EDH deck on the boards. I had not really had an idea to jump start this until now. Every one fell free to jump in with ideas and/or thoughts. Today I found a card that I had never seen and it got me thinking. Deserted Temple. The first thing I thought of was Gaea's Cradle. This would put us in green and we could have Crop Rotation.*** I then considered Tolaria West as another land tutor and if we are in blue also, why not add Tolarian Academy? Minamo, School at Water's Edge does the same thing as Deserted Temple for the Cradle and Academy (they are Legendary) and Vesuva can copy the Deserted Temple. So the deck is blue/green and wants lots of artifacts, creatures or artifact creatures. From here I figured if I have lots of artifact creatures I would need Steel Overseer. At this point I wanted to think about our general. I could only think of two U/G legendary creatures and Ixos is using Momir Vig. So I was leaning towards Edric. Turns out we got a third option. Experiment Kraj! You can see the pandora's box of possibilities this opens up with Steel Overseer. I will try and keep an updated list of card additions with links as we post them. Let's build this thing, go! *** When the hell did Crop Rotation come off the restricted list in vintage and why isn't any one playing it?! Just noticed this.

Tolarian Academy is banned. So do we stick with the Steel Overseer/Experiment Kraj plan or move to mono green?

Tolarian Academy is banned. So do we stick with the Steel Overseer/Experiment Kraj plan or move to mono green? Stick with the Overseer/Kraj. Blue already likes lotsa artifacts, has lotsa tutors to find em, and can do other cool things with them (I think Tinker might be banned, but I'm not sure). Plus, Experiment Kraj seems like a really confusing and therefore cool general to build around (I prefer to build around the general, but I know not everybody does). Make the bulk of the creatures artifact in flavor, and the Cradle/Deserted Temple thing still works (lotsa land fetchers to go get em). Also with green you got lots of dudes that do stuff with counters. I dunno if any of em are any good (a couple spikes, I guess), but it's an option. Overseer can't do anything with em, but Kraj gets more options. That's my opinion. And the Kraj looks cool.

A couple I saw that might be good (haven't looked at all): Etched Oracle, Filigree Sages, Golem Artisan, Junkdiver (just for artifact goodness, not for Kraj), Karn, Kuldotha Forgemaster (oooh!), Masticore, Memnarch, Myr Retriever (to go with Junkdiver), and I'll stop there. I had assumed there would be a whole bunch more artifact critters with good activated abilities (I know there are more, I just got tired of looking). Oh, Phyrexian Ironfoot and other pay to untap dudes, but you might not want to go with too many of them; Kraj would still untap during upkeep, but those other guys wouldn't.

One of the reasons I want to make this a group build is to keep the power level in check. I thought about Elvish Aberration and Pili-Pala with The Karj. If they each have +1/+1 counters on them The Karj can make an arbitrarily large amount of mana. If we add Mishra's Factory we can turn it into an artifact creature, give it a +1/+1 counter and then give it an arbitrarily large power/toughness with The Karj. But this might be the kind of things I need to stay away from doing in EDH. Is Weird Harvest ok to play? What if we search up X artifact creatures and a Mycosynth Golem and then drop them all in play for free because of affinity for artifacts? The hardest part for me is figuring out what other people are ok with. Ixos, you talked about maybe hitting some FNMs at some point. Thought I would tell you shocklands are confirmed as reprints in R2R. Five in the first set, the other five in the next.

Oh and about Kuldotha Forgemaster, so good! Not sure if I have one but wanted to get some for Legacy any way.

It all depends on how you use it. Making arbitrarily large amounts of things isn't bad, unless you do it on turn 3 and kill everybody instantly. If you plan on making a really huge critter, or making many, it's nice if everybody has a chance to answer it before they die. But remember, big huge cool things are what EDH is all about, so I don't think a big Kraj is too over the top. My general feeling about combos is, 2 card combos that kill everybody on turn 3 are bad. 5 card combos that kill everybody on turn 12 or whatever are okay. The thing you mentioned above sounds okay to me, since (if I'm reading it right) it's a 4 card combo that can make one very huge dude that can kill somebody if they don't have an answer for it. Infinite mana isn't bad, how you use it could be, though. It's a fine line to walk, and everybody's opinion is different. When in doubt, make the game last longer, imo. See above. If you aren't doing it early, then it should be fine. One thing to do is ask yourself, would this be fun to play against. And if you do play it and the groans you hear are not good natured, then you might want to change something. (I'm thinking that about The Bouncy Bounce, in fact; Seedborn Muse doesn't get good natured groans, but I might need more data before I make a decision... ) Cool! Wish I'd put together a playset the first time around. Maybe I'll have a chance this time around. If I do FNM, I'll prolly roll with a super cheap deck of some sort. Right now I'm leaning towards an MBC kinda thing, with cheap demons for the critters, but I have a feeling it'll be too slow to handle Standard, which seems incredibly fast. Maybe I'm just old...
