Phelddagrif wins again! Bwah?! That's right, gentle readers, the triumvirate of Visara, Sol'kanar, and Azusa were unable to take down the Friendly Purple Hippo in his second appearance. Why is this, you may ask? Ask you may. And I'm not sure I have a good answer for you. Mana wasn't a problem this game, but I had gotten spoiled by the massive card draw from the previous game; my hand felt pretty light the whole time, but I had mana so no problem. Too bad I didn't have much to do with it. Visara played a Hunted Horror on like turn 2; groovy, except that he gave the centaurs to Sol'kanar. Eh, whatever, since Azusa did nothing but play lands. Same here, pretty much. And then Sol-kanar asploded. Critter after critter, swinging for the fences. The rest of us (not Azusa so much) managed to contain him. Then Visara decided to go off. Sol'kanar continued to play the control game, recurring Gilded Drake (thanks to Nightscape Master and Phyrexian Reclamation) to steal big dudes from both Azusa and Visara. Man, that deck is pretty cool once it gets going. I did something cool during the midst of this madness. Visara had a Gravepact and a few little dudes in play, Sol'kanar had a Ryusei in play, along with a ton of guys. Luckily, only his Hellkite Charger was a flyer. I say, "man, let's don't get too carried away." I figure this is a pretty good time to Afterlife Ryusei. Little dudes blow up, bigger flying dudes get sacced to Gravepact, reset. (I was kinda proud of that one... ) Meanwhile, Azusa has been doing a whole bunch of graveyard twiddling. He's shuffling stuff in, pulling it out, and worst of all, casting and using Memory Jar like 30 times. Made me discard lots of hunted dudes and - gulp - Feldon's Cane. Doh! No wincon for me! Wait. So Azusa has done nothing more than generate an obscene amount of mana the entire game (with not much to do with it), Sol'kanar and Visara have been struggling for supremacy the whole game, and Phelddagrif has been trying to kindly remind everybody that they can draw cards from Unifying Theory and Well of Knowledge (should they so choose - and nobody ever did but me, dammit, shitty cards!). The Friendly Purple Hippo even reminded everybody that he'd not only played several hunted crittters, but he'd also cast Show and Tell early on in the game. It must've worked; either that, or everybody felt sorry for me since I had absolutely nothing in play... A Beacon of Immortality let me feel like I could stick around for awhile. Visara had managed to get the Unholy Trinity in play - Gravepact, Haunted Crossroads, and Attrition. Good Lord! Sol'kanar still managed to keep him in check with a variety of spells and critters (including the immortal Gilded Drake). Azusa continued to do not much but produce mana and play Memory Jar (where's all that fat, dude?). I played a Wheel and Deal (everybody but me discard and draw 7) and a Flux (I discard a bunch of land), but I'm not sure it did any good. Sol'kanar cast Wheel of Fortune at some point, discarding Shattering Pulse, but got it back later. I did manage to get out a Nullmage Advocate at some point, blowing up Azusa's 12/12 green minion generator (Riptide Replicator). My Advocate was sacced to Gravepact soon after, dangit (after returning Ashes to Ashes and a land to Visara's hand so that he could eliminate Sol'kanar's stolen Darksteel Collosus; Ashes to Ashes got Wheeled before he could use it...). Finally, Azusa decides he's had enough of this game. Hurricane for a ton (19, to be exact). Sol'kanar had pinged himself a whole bunch (stinger lands and Phyrexian Reclamation) during the game, and Visara had taken some beats. They both die. Phelddagrif goes to 61 (thank you, Beacon of Immortality!). I look at my deck, check out Azusa's. My Cane is gone. Gah! Think I have more cards despite Kozilek reshuffling, but I'm not sure. Can I beat him down? Hunted Phantasm is in my hand but... Oh, wait a sec. "How much life you got after that Hurricane, dude?" "Three." Okay, the Phantasm might be able to do it. But, chances are, he can kill it before I can swing. Yeah, he's green, but I guaran-goddam-tee he has enough critter killin in that deck and the mana to make it happen... Draw. Land. Draw (from my Howling Mine). Beacon of Tomorrows. OMFG. With 12 mana available, and exactly 4 of them blue, I cast the Phantasm, give Azusa his goblins, (to which he says, "yeah, whatever" as if he knew I'd drawn the Beacon...), and then cast Beacon. Untap, draw 2, swing for 4 with my unblockable dude. Wow. Phelddagrif wins again! Was it politics? Smart play? Whining? I think a combination of all three. I'll admit that I politicked like a champ, and having nothing threatening helped in that effort. Smart play, yeah, I think so; why take care of shit myself when others are willing to do it for me (not that I have a ton of answers, but, well, there were times when I could have answered and others did it for me)? And whining? Hell yes! Mainly I think it was luck (again). I topdecked the Time Walk when I needed it. Had I not (or had Azusa not gotten pissed at the other guys when he did), no way I win. As it was, I happened to have the Phantasm in hand, and happened to draw Beacon of Tomorrows. And Azusa happened to be at 3 life. Once again, I shouldn't have won, but I did! And for some reason I think that the Friendly Purple Hippo will be unfairly targeted next game... Cool Shit: Noble Benefactor - when he dies, everybody tutor! Got him into play, he died, everybody tutored! This guy is fucking awesome! Afterlife vs, Ryusei -still proud of this one. I play an innocuous instant (from Masques, no less), and reset the board. I like it (and I think that falls under the "smart plays" heading). Hunted Critters - played a couple (Lammasu and Phantasm, and Indentured Djinn off of Show and Tell), and they were cool. Lammasu kept me around early, Phantasm won me the game, and the Djinn made everybody happy (since he hit with Show and Tell, which always makes ppl happy). Beacons - they are never ever coming out of this deck. I don't care what you say. Never. Beloved Chaplain - the guys wanted to kill this dude asap. Makes me wonder if the pro monocolored guy ought to go in here, too... Polymorph - got Wheeled away, but I still think it combos well with Phelddagrif; "here, have a hippo, and now have something a lot cooler than a hippo!" Sol'kanar Radiated his Rend Flesh - that was awesome. Visara had Soul Foundry imprinted with Solemn Simulacrum in play at the same time as he had Attrition. That would have been fucking brutal, had he gotten to actually do anything with it (Azusa busted it up on his next untap...). Azusa cast Tooth and Nail for Rofellos and Eternal Witness; no, I don't know why... Out: Opal-Eye, Konda's Yojimbo - he sat in my hand the whole game (until he got Wheeled...). Never wanted to cast him. Will replace with Swords to Plowshares; I know, I know, that card's too good! But think about it, it still fits the theme: I do something to you that you don't like, but I repay you! Sure, it's prolly the best removal spell ever (no prolly about it...), but still. Swords comes in (and it's not like I don't have other removal). Awakening - yeah, I wanna be a nice guy and help everybody, but this just seems stupid in this metagame. I've drawn it in both games and haven't wanted to cast it in either. I'm not sure what goes in for it, though. Any ideas? Unifying Theory and/or Well of Knowledge - I am the only person who's actually used these to draw cards (well, Visara may have at some point, but not very much if at all). I think they need to be replaced. I don't know what to trade in for them, though. I like em, but nobody uses them. Any ideas? The deck is fun to play, even though I'm really not ever doing much to help myself. I really enjoy watching the other guys do their cool shit, and at the same time just trying to stay alive. The fact that I've managed to win twice is beside the point! The Friendly Purple Hippo just wants everybody to have fun! He loves you, and he wants you to love him. Free cards, free mana, and free critters - why wouldn't you love him?!

I think you should take out that equipment that makes them untargetable an put in lightning Greaves instead. Its better and cheaper and the haste would let me swing with one of my stolen fatties. Hmm, okay: +Lightning Greaves - Neurok Stealthsuit And now stuff that may or may not be good... + Umezawa's Jitte (one of the best equips ever) + Sword of Fire and Ice (ditto) + Sword of Light and Shadow (thritto) + Journeyer's Kike (dig for mana, thin deck) + Shattering Spree (more artifact killin') + Grim Monolith (big colorless mana) + Mana Vault (ditto and it's a German one) + Crater Hellion (fat and burn little guys) + Avatar of Fury (fat, and A-hole Bro WILL have 7 or more lands soon enough) + Godo, Bandit Warlord (tutor for some of that equipment, maybe not as good as I think) - Talisman of Indulgence (replaced colored mana with big mana) - Izzet Signet (ditto) - Whim of Volrath (prolly too cute, pro color Swords can do this same kinda thing for Sol'kanar) - Darksteel Pendant (trying Kite in its place) - Blanket of Night (see Whim of Volrath) - Demonspine Whip (replaced with better equipment) - Tatsuma, the Dragon's Fang (ditto) - Argentum Armor (ditto) - Kuro, Pitlord (replaced by "better" fat) - Heartless Hidetsugu (ditto, and too cute) I'm actually thinking that Godo might be better as...almost anything else. Was thinking an artifact tutor, but why do that when it could be just a real tutor? Okay: + Diabolic Tutor (better than Godo) - Godo (worse than another tutor) I kept the critter-stealin' stuff that redshirt used last game, and he wanted to keep Anarchist and Scrivener despite my objections. I thought about adding a little more critter-stealin' (like Control Magic and Dominating Licid, which is a creature then an enchantment then a creature then an enchantment and so on...), but figured we'd see how the deck works before I make any more drastic changes (hell, I've already changed 11 cards!). I also like the idea of Fork and Twincast (Radiate was fun last time), but I'm not sure what I'd cut for em. Really, I ought to get RMS to build an aggro deck for redshirt! A couple changes to Everybody's Favorite Friendly Purple Hippo: + Swords to Plowshares (like I said in the above post, StP is the best removal ever, but it still fits the theme of the deck) + Dawnstrider (think will be more useful than the mana-intensive Opal-Eye) + Gate to the Aether ( force my generosity on everybody) - Opal-Eye, Konda's Yojimbo (mana-intensive and only defends vs one source while Dawnstrider can prevent an entire combat phase) - Well of Knowledge (got it out both games, nobody used it not even me) - Unifying Theory (wanted to keep this, but I was the only one who used it in both games) Yeah, the changes up my mana curve, but hopefully I won't have dead cards in hand (Opal-Eye, never wanted to cast him) or dead cards on table (Well and Theory, sort of). Also note that Phelddagrif doesn't run any mass destruction. That is intentional! The Friendly Purple Hippo doesn't want to make ppl mad at him, he just wants to make sure that everybody plays nice. There are changes coming to Visara (+ Extraplanar Lens, Maga Traitor to Mortals, and a brutal vampire chick that doubles mana and pumps), but I haven't done that yet. Not sure what to take out as TGL seems to like the deck as is. Prolly Sorceress Queen (she hasn't done much--actually, I don't think she's done anything but die a few times). TGL seems to love Balthor the Defiled so he stays. The Mephidross Vamp/Triskelion combo stays (wanna see if he ever gets it out and understands what it does), as does Soul Foundry (TGL really likes that, too). Thinking Helm of Possession might come out, but Ritual of the Machine must stay (I own only one, it's cool as shit, and has a great name--it must be played somewhere!). Hmm, just noticed Shizo, Death's Storehouse in here; that would prolly be better in Sol'kanar (and Visara might prefer a swamp for use with Coffers/Lens). Well, so let it be written, so let it be done: + Swamp + Extraplanar Lens - Shizo - Helm of Possession I haven't provided decklists, but any suggestions would be appreciated. One thing that redshirt requested was some lifegain for Sol'kanar. My brain isn't working real well atm, so any specific suggestions for good lifegain for that deck, yeah, I'll take em. Soul Burn maybe? Dunno. EDIT: Whoops, noticed that Awakening is still in Phelddagrif. Must be changed (just too much). Also, 8 & 1/2 Tails needs to go (doesn't help opponents). So: - Awakening (too much considering that TGL and the Visara deck exists in the metagame) - 8 & 1/2 Tails (only helps me) + Crumble (Swords version of artifact kill) + Wall of Blossoms (yeah, only helps me, but I already run Wall of Omens, and this is the original) I had thought that there was an enchantment killer version of Crumble/Swords, but I can't find it. Any help with that?

Ooooh, Oath of Lieges! Changes to Phelddagrif: - Mother of Runes (love her, but she sadly only targets my critters) + Oath of Lieges (everbody lika da land!) I love this deck. scaro (and hopefully RMS) prepare to suffer the unmitigated kindness of the Friendly Purple Hippo this weekend! Rainbows, glitter, hugs, and the doom of unconditional love! It will be brutally generous! Bwa ha ha ha ha! EDIT: And more spreading-the-wealth action! - Cho-Manno, Revolutionary (he's an expensive wall that doesn't help anybody else and only combos with Pariah) + Soldevi Sentry (cheap, combos with Pariah, and gives somebody a card, yay! Plus, I don't think I've ever played with this card, bonus!)

No, not a gauntlet. More like a small soft bag full of pixie dust. When applied to the face, it smooths wrinkles, erases blemishes, and leaves your skin feeling soft. It smells nice, too.

Friendly Purple Hippo rides the pine, gives Rubinia Soulsinger a shot at the title. Hmm, not what we expected... Ruby comes out maybe a little too strong, maybe because I had the mindset of "hey, I don't have to be nice to everybody, so FEEL MY POWER!!" Yeah, not the best strategy. My Land Tax got blown up (by Azusa), followed closely by my Lightning Greaves (by Azusa again, asshole!), so retribution was called for. Yavimaya Elder swung a couple times. I Mystic Snaked something of Azusa's (destroy my shit, will ya?!), and then Briberyed Kozilek out of his deck (yeah, dude irritated me, had to let him know I was there...heh...sigh, I'm so ashamed... ). Sol'kanar, who had been calmly building up a mana base, Gilded Draked "my" Kozilek (and Azusa began singing the Tweety Bird song, getting it in my head for the rest of the night, jerk), and attacked me with something, which got blocked by "my" Drake. Luckily, I managed to Duplicant "his" Kozilek before it could swing on me (I had managed to swing it at Azusa before it got stolen from me, and that was awesome). My Duplicant got Crystal Sharded, and I told Sol'kanar that he could do that all day and I wouldn't complain (bluffing as I was getting uncomfortably low on life thanks to my stinger lands and beats from Sol'kanar and Azusa). Meanwhile, Visara was doing what he does best (better than me, even, and I had thought I was pretty good at it): sitting there being non-offensive. Jerk. I decided that I had maybe been a little too aggressive too early, so I sat back and tried to build some kind of presence (bluffing may or may not have played a part in this - the only counterspell I saw the whole frickin game got Memory Jarred away by Azusa...). Sol'kanar started some Drake/Shard/Phyrexian Reclamation shenanigans, but the rest of us managed to bust it up before it got too crazy. At one point I had Treachery in hand. I held it for awhile, and then drew Eladamri's Call. I Called for Eternal Witness, planning to get back Lightining Greaves, cast it, cast Ruby, and start doing some shenanigans of my own. Didn't work out that way, but I did get the Greaves in play along with Arcanis the Omnipotent. Guess how many cards I got to draw off him... Wrong! I got to draw 3! And then my Greaves bit it followed shortly by Arcanis. I guess that when you have the title "the Omnipotent" people tend to gun for you. Let's not forget about Visara, though, no matter how much he would like you to. He and Sol'kanar have been fighting a pretty intense battle over Helldozer; Sol'kanar has managed to repeatedly steal/kill it, but Visara keeps getting it back (Haunted Crossroads was heavily involved). Azusa finally manages to overcome his early setbacks (thanks to me), and has gotten Symbiotic Wurm and Khalni Hydra in play. I summon Sakashima the Imposter, copying the Wurm, and pray. My prayers go unanswered (or well, it may be that the answer was "no"). Azusa sacs his Wurm to Miren, the Moaning Well, and then Hurricanes for like 19. Sol'kanar and I die (damn!). Visara calmly wipes the board with Bane of the Living, brings something back with Haunted Crossroads (pretty sure it was that goddam Helldozer!), and recasts his general. Azusa is in topdeck mode, and draws land after land instead of answers (he'd gained a comfortable life total thanks to Miren, and Visara was hanging on at 6 thanks to Consume Spirit on something that Sol'kanar had stolen earlier on). Despite his valiant struggle, Azusa is unable to find an answer and Visara swings in for the win. Afterwards, decks were changed a little (or a lot). Azusa stayed the same (that deck is still uber, it just had a little bad luck). Butcher of Malakir and Nirkana Revenant are in Visara (can't remember what was taken out for those, sorry - oh, Seizan came out, and, uh...), and we decided on a few more changes: - B/R & B/U fetchlands - Ravenous Rats - Hunted Horror + Strip Mine + Bottle Gnome + Bone Shredder + Victimize Not sure what this does to the mana curve, but we're going to find out! There were some changes to Sol'kanar, too. Too many changes to document, but, hell, I'll try! - Twisted Abomination - Jiwari, the Earth Aflame - Prophetic Bolt - Spinal Embrace - Umezawa's Jitte - Hellkite Charger - Mana Vault + Expedition Map + Blitzschlag + Mystical Tutor + Yawg's Will + Dominating Licid + Thalakos Deceiver + Earthquake + Anger The card count on this deck is suspect, will have to verify. And that makes me want to count all my decks. Damn.

A couple ideas for The Borg EDH Deck: - Want it to be UR (and maybe another color), so that limits my selection of generals. I want the general to be on theme, but I might have to stretch this part a little. Niv-Mizzet (although I wanted him for another deck), or Intet (but I think B would be more appropriate than G). Sliver Queen seems more appropriate (sorta), but I don't own one and don't want to do a 5color deck. The stealy generals don't have red in em, so they're out. Also, scaro was right that Intruder Alarm should be in, but those two would be waaaaay over the top and I don't wanna run that kinda combo (in the EDH environment, it wouldn't really be too degenerate, but it would put too big a target on me, bigger than stealing stuff already will). Think I might just go with Intet for the green - green has lotsa token makers, which seems kinda on theme.
- Ambassador Laquatus (Locutus of Borg, thanks rms!)(hrmm, and it seems I don't own one... )
- Empress Galina (Borg Queen, captured Data in the movie)
- Various cubes (doubling, delif's, Myr Incubator, Mana Vault) for the Borg cubes of course
- some spheres (Borg spheres from the movie) such as of Resistance, but prolly not Winter Orb
- Intruder Alarm (scaro suggested, Borg ignore you til they think you're a threat, but then they ALL come after you)
- stealy stuff (lotsa different Control Magic type stuff, and red has at least a couple things that steal lands)
- Mindslaver (the ultimate stealy!)
- fog effects (a reason for green! they ignore you til you're a threat)
- leveling critters? they adapt and improve based on your tactics (Intet kinda, sorta, almost feels like this, too)
- Future Sight (the Enterprise crew saw "the future" in the movie and what it would be like if they didn't intervene [actually, their present], but I don't know if I want to run TWO "combos with everything" cards in a theme deck)
- Ashnod's Transmogrant (turn you into a Borg)
- Grafted Skullcap (and think there are other grafted stuffs; very on theme)
- various equipment (the Borg start out weak, but get stronger as they adapt to your tactics) (and That Which Was Taken could be the ultimate expression of that?)
- token makers (art &/or G, seems on theme, maybe)
- any other legends for important ST:TNG characters? Maybe something for Data, Lore, Picard, Q (made the Borg aware of the Federation). Lore could be Sakashima (he impersonated Data in his first appearance, but that doesn't have much to do with the Borg, although he was pretty shifty when he did his stuff with Hugh and the other Borg rebels), Data could be Arcanis or some other card-drawer (encyclopedic knowledge) or Karn since he's an android, Picard could be...hell, why not Niv-Mizzet? Smart (card draw) and kicks ass (ping you and Niv is a DRAGON). Heh, I like that!
- stuff that says "all these kind of things are these kind of things" which W and B are the examples that come to mind...not running those colors...(Standardize is blue though)
- Hive Mind (just for the name, I don't own one, but so on theme)
- Crawl Space (the Jeffries Tubes that the crew of the Enterprise are constantly crawling through)
I would like to stay away from sweepers like Wrath, and also avoid targeted critter destruction. I think I'm going to go with removal that steals stuff (espec for critters), and stuff that alters/makes it useful for me for other kinds of permanents. Not sure about that, maybe just go stealy for all removal. Buffing type enchantments seem good, oh, and stuff like Anger, Wonder and so on (we figured you out, it cost us to do so, but now we all know how!). I like that! I'm trying to think of a good way to represent the Borg rank and file. I had thought leveling critters, of which I own damn few, like maybe 3 or so (and at least 1 of those is B). But I'm also thinking slivers, of which I own more (but none of the good ones). Both seem on theme, and both seem interesting. What do you think? While brainstorming this, I've found myself comparing this deck to rms's Disney deck. I seem to be going predominately for card effect with my theme, while rms went card art for his (much more challenging, btw). scaro was brainstorming a theme deck earlier tonight, and he was going with card names almost exclusively (although I think he's going to change his to 8bit NES games for a theme, which would be much cooler, imo). I find this interesting as in I'm sure it says something about each of us as Magic players (Timmy/Johnny/Spike), and how we think, and prolly as who we are as people. Were I a psychologist, I could probably go on and on with analyses and whatnot, but since I'm not, I just noticed and went, "huh, instresting." I could try to analysisize (hey rms, Bushism!), but I'm not sure any of us would like what I came up with (especially me). So I'll just share my observation and move on. I think this deck will be fun, and hopefully I can get it together for next DnD night. If I do, I'll let ya know how it does. EDIT: Heh, forgot to document the exploits of our favorite Friendly Purple Hippo. The 5 of us (me, scaro, rms, evergirl, and the dude that I barely know who I'll call JonJon [rms kept calling him that, so I will follow his lead]) waited around for TGL to show up (the_glenn, I believe on here, but he'll always be TGL to me). We played Give Me The Brain a few times, and I think I won one of those games (I don't often), but I may not have. Hell, I'm old, I can't remember important stuff like that. But when TGL showed up, it was on! I had Phelddagrif, of course, TGL ran Visara, of course, scaro ran Child of Alara (only cause he wanted to play all 5 colors), rms had Kira, Great Glass Spinner (hmm, watch out for him), and evergirl and JonJon ran a couple of the Commander precons (Kaalia and Riku, respectively). My threat assessment might have been a little off, as I targeted Kira as Public Enemy #1 (I know how TGL plays his deck, and he wasn't going to do anything early; scaro was definitely going to be degenerate, it's just who he is, but it was going to take awhile for him to become so (and he did so in an unexpected way, actually, kudos); and the other two were playing precons, how bad could it be? [wait]; I figgered monoU Kira was going to get irritating and that right quick; I was right, but...). I got an early Utopia tree (mo mana!), Hunted Troll (tokens to Child, quickly red Vowed, whichever one that is, by Riku), and an advocate in play. Feelin' good, nobody is going crazy, peace and happiness. And then Kaalia blows up the world, misreading her spell which hits nonfliers while trying to kill Child's faeries. I regen the troll and proceed to draw lots of stuff that isn't land for a good long while. Visara, who's sitting next to me (my threat assessment radius is pretty much Visara, Riku, and Kira; the other two are kinda far away, and that is a weakness of mine...), gets out an Extraplanar Lens. Child is stalled at 2 land (hence my gift of faeries), and Kira is starting to steal critters left and right. Hey man, not fair, those don't belong to you! I play a Noble Benefactor who dies pretty quickly (can't remember who killed him, think it was Riku). I think about getting a land (lame, I know, but I was stuck at three), but I elect to grab Oath of Lieges instead. More land more times, and me and Child are happy (he tutored for a land, obviously not knowing what I was getting). The Benefactor worked overtime this game, tutoring at least one more time, and almost a third if it hadn't been for Kaalia's enchantment that didn't let anybody search and stuff (and it seemed as if nobody but me was running ench destruction, and mine come in the form of critters who never ever ever got over summoning sickness). At one point Riku played that thing that let's everbody tutor for land and put it into play (Kaalia's enchantment hadn't reared its horribly ugly head, yet) total of all mana spent by all players on it. Visara and I elect to not spend any mana on it as it was already at 16 by the time it got to us (heh). I pulled all my basics from my library (sweet), leaving only business and nonbasics (none of which are good, btw). Visara was happily tapping each of his swamps for 3 thanks to his lens and his new vampire shade chick. He also had Nantuko Shade (of Mr. Henry fame) in play, along with Cabal Coffers and a Greavesed up Visara; and he was doing precious little to control the board! Dammit TGL, flex that muscle! I received a compliment regarding the one Revised dually I had in play (Tropical Island, iirc) from JonJon. I was at first startled; I sometimes forget that not everybody started playing Magic damn near 20 years ago... (And he later asked if I wanted to sell/trade it; the answer should be obvious...) I'm managing to do precious little - none of my huggy stuff will stick, and Kira is actually repeatedly casting Timetwister crap, taking away my one real wincon! (Oh, that would be Feldon's Cane + Prosperity/Skyscribing + various other stuff like Mine/Anvil/Kami that lets ppl draw. Actually, my other wincon is a Hunted critter with evasion + Empyrial Armor + Anvil, but I don't think that's gonna happen too often .) Riku is doing cool stuff that isn't too out of control, Kaalia is annoying everybody with her anti-tutor enchantment, Visara is sitting on his dominant board position and not exploiting it.
I proceed to do what every other hug deck player in my situation would do: I whine. It doesn't work. People know my politics too well, I guess. And it gets worse, but first...
(Oh, and a minor rules quibble that embarrasses me: I think Child asked about commander damage. I asserted with much confidence that when anybody took 21 damage COMBINED from commanders, he was dead. scaro said that he thought it was 21 dmg from a single commander. We went out to smoke, and scaro looked it up. And he was right. You can take 20 dmg each from 100 different commanders, but until one of them deals that 21st point of dmg, you're still in it. Damn, I hate being wrong!)
Let's rewind several paragraphs. Kira had stolen from Kaalia an angel that let him gain 3 life whenever a land hit play. Riku cast his "everbody put a buttload of lands in play" thing, and Kira went up to a couple hundred life. Between then and now, Child had managed to get into play half-a-dozen allies that were 20+/20+. I have Beacon of Immortality AND Reverse the Sands in my hand. Heh. But I didn't see Child's ally beef coming when I was scheming. (I had planned to Sands then Beacon, and thus pissing off Kira greatly.) Child swung at Kira, naturally (I think he had no blockers atm). I cast Beacon on Kira (he was very grateful), and then Sands on me when it rolled around to my turn (Kira no longer grateful, and Kaalia unreasonably upset with me following this act).
More craziness ensues in which I can't keep a permanent in play. I almost feel more sorry for Riku than myself, as he does a bunch of cool shit on his turn, every turn, but it all gets blown up. I do something that I think is cool during this (may or may not have been). Child has gotten out some more allies, but they aren't crazy big like the last ones (Visara finally decided to start taking them out). Riku casts something that blows up all critters. Child tries Ghostway on his guys (not big yet, but they will be). So I'm like, hell no, and cast Time Stop.
Now, it should be obvious what I want to do. I want everything to die (I think I had nothing in play, as usual for this particular game), and I want Child's removed critters to never come back. Seems so simple: everything dies, except for Child's dudes, who go hide in the ether, I say enough shenanigans, we're done right now, never to get to end of turn, Child's dudes never come back. And scaro and JonJon erupt with "wait, wait, when are you doing that, what's on the stack, who has priority, blah blah?!?!" I'm taken aback. Uh, isn't it obvious? I thought we'd resolved this shit. Everything dies, turn over.
Confused, I declare that I'm going outside to smoke, and they can figure it out (not sure if I said that out loud, as it sounds kinda rude when I type it now, and I didn't mean to be rude, I was just perplexed). I think I set the card down in front of one of them (can't amemba which) on my way out, stated how I thought the shit was gonna go down, and went out side with the words "priority," "stack," and "pass" ringing in my ears.
At first I was like wtf, why is this that damn complicated? My trump trumped both of your trumps. Time Stop says "end the turn." We're done. I win this round, see ya in a minute when my face will prolly be smashed.
That was for like while I was lighting my cigarette. And then I was thinking, "man, I hope I didn't piss those guys off." I had, I thought to myself, broken Wil Wheaton's first rule: don't be a dick. I should have stayed in there, listened to their arguments, presented my own, and basically not acted like a dick.
scaro came out a minute later to smoke with me, and I asked him what they had decided. He told me it worked like I wanted it to. I was like, cool. And everything was right with the world.
But, yeah, me not understanding or paying attention to the stack, priority, and that kind of shit, that's why I suck at Magic.
scaro and I come back in to witness the double-striking horde of dragons that Kaalia had put together. She spends some time deciding who to attack, and eventually swings at everybody. I had Oblation in my hand, and could have returned the double-strike enabling dude to her deck, but I elect to just take my 40. I'm still over 150 after the attack, but Visara and Kira die.
I do a whole bunch of nothing on my turn, Riku kills Child and Kaalia on his turn, and it's down to just me and him.
Now, I have a bunch of life (down to 70ish thanks to his last swing), and I have Prosperity in hand. His deck is looking thinnish, but he has 2 Artisan of Kozilek in play (and a buttload of other critters). I have 2 blockers, one of which is Swans. I elect to Prosperity for everything, putting him to 9 or so cards in library, and planning to block an Artisan with Swans to deck him. So naturally, he steals my blockers, swings with the army, knocks me down to 6. I have Beacon in hand (ha!), but no mana to cast it, and he burns me out.
Crud.

Uh...don't forget to metion that all of that took around 6 HOURS to accomplish!!! Whew. All in all though, it was a pretty EPIC game!! I say next time we try the 'EDH(Commander)/Emperor' format. I think that the Kira deck would be a great Emperor deck. ;D

Uh...don't forget to metion that all of that took around 6 HOURS to accomplish!!! Yeah, it was pretty epic. I think I would have preferred 3 2-hour games instead of 1 6-hour game, but it was awfully cool. I think TGL even had fun, and he seems to hate the marathons! I say next time we try the 'EDH(Commander)/Emperor' format. I think that the Kira deck would be a great Emperor deck. ;D I know I've played Emperor before, but can't remember much how it works. Kira might be a good emperor. You'd have to make sure that your partners don't want to play out of their graveyards, though - too many Timetwisters!! Your Kira deck is frickin' cool, but it might draw a little too much hate for a free for all (my Grand Arbiter deck was the same way - a little too many annoying cards). But you might be onto something with Emperor; you won't come under fire right away, and they'll be focused on killing you anyway, so might as well be as irritating as possible! Also, that thing that made everybody's hand size 0 ( Jin-Gitaxias) could be built around if your partners are expecting it. Hmm, ideas, they be flowin'...

So I'm looking for cards for my Karador deck (which will be nasty), and I find some cool stuff. Shiny Bane of the Living to go into TGL's Visara deck (replacing the non-shiny), and shiny March of Souls for Friendly Purple Hippo. And not only is it shiny, but it's also initialed by Bruva Seth! That particular card is already +2 (shiny and altered), but I've been wanting some sort of sweeper for Hippo, a friendly one, and here it is! So + another one! So, what needs to come out? - Congregate - it's a lame life-gainer, unlike the better life-gainers in the deck; I mean, it could gain about 12 life max since critters don't last long, and if it's gonna gain more, I want a creature sweeper instead! And life gain is the most terrible sin one can commit, right, evergirl?
- Beloved Chaplain - he's a wall, pretty much, and a shitty one at that. All he does is not die to critters. Doesn't even wear Pariah well (our metagame seems to be "kill everything, build an army, kill everything, build an army, kill everything, build an army...).
- A different wall - they're just walls, they're also critters so they die easy. But most of my walls do more than the Chaplain, at least.
Okay, after some thought.... - Congregate (haven't drawn it in 4 games, and we all know I'll just cast it on me no matter how much I say I won't, although I did Beacon rms last game...) + March of Souls (found a friendly sweeper! Cause there's times when the Hippo just needs to say, "hey, you guys, let's play nice..." That, and shit gets scary!) I still want to replace the Chaplain, any ideas?

Just to let you guys know, I'm co-hosting a tourny on Sept. 17th at the fairgrounds. It will be a co-juncture between the Jefferson City Gaming Community(I made that up ;D) and Slackers Games. the format will be....
....
...wait for it...
Two-Headed Giant/Commander!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
$5 per person with 25% of the entry fees going to the 'Make-A-Wish' Foundation. (Including any matching funds from local area businesses that wish to support/contribute.) We're going to ask a few of the local business if they would like to pitch-in any gift certificates to be given away as random prize drawings throughout the tourney, as well.
50 life per team, with 25 poison counters allowed for an alternate kill. (No alternate kill with General damage. Sorry.)
Level 2 judge, Regina Cross, will be present to officiate.
Notifications have been given to Sedalia, Columbia, Moberly, Rolla, and soon St. Roberts, K. C., and St. Charles.
Wizards has already been contacted and they, as well as Slackers, will be providing extra prize support. Packs, promo cards, play mats, etc. Woot.
More updates to follow:... [/li][li] [/li][li] [/li][li] [/list]

www.eldergiants.webs.com Hey, guys, this is the website that we've created just for the tourney if'n you'd like to check it out. Also, we've decided to raise the entry fee to $10 per person. We mainly did this to be able to donate more to the charity. It would be pretty cheesy for only 10 teams to show up and only be able to give them $25. Holla at me if you've got any other questions.

So are infinite combos forbidden, or is that just for the extra prize stuff? Website seems unclear.
Sounds fun, not sure if I can make it or not. Guess I have a month to figure out a deck and convince a partner to go with me. We'll see.

Dammit RMS, now I have an idea for a deck . (Don't worry, no Friendly Purple Hippo for tournament!) Now I guess I just need a partner and inclination to attend...

Wrangle Mike or Glenn to go. If you get Mike, see if Glenn and his brother would be interested in teaming up.
We've decided against banning the combos. Just be prepared to disrupt them or deal with them.

Friendly Purple Hippo rides the bench again. Instead... KARADOR!! BORN TO LIVE FOREVER MORE!!Can't remember the exact sequence of the first game, but Debtor's Knell is a fucking house. I think I got an early Loxodon Hierarch and kept recurring him for lotsa life. I know I cast Karador multiple times until he became just a little too expensive (17 mana, even with many critters in the yard, too much, but Genesis was in there...for a while...). redshirt did a whole lot of nothing this game (playing Sol'kanar, uncharacteristic), and TGL had Visara. He and I fought over graveyards (I kept stealing his Avatar of Woe with Knell). A-Hole Bro was playing a BRG deck with some dragon as his general (non-legendary, but we let him do it). At one point, A-Hole Bro played a Bojuka Bog, destroying my grave. Destroying my graveyard is not something that makes Karador happy. Asshole Brother had indeed proved himself to be an asshole, and thus I was not remorseful when I cast Tooth and Nail for Yosei and Vish Kal (Vish Kal, also a fucking house, and combo with Yosei...). A-Hole Bro must pay! I gain a ton of life and pretty much take control of the game. Somebody blows up everything (can't remember who), but a timely Total Defense of the Heart lets me tutor up a Squallmonger and finish the rest of em off. Second game I get crap and everybody's gunning for me. redshirt swings with Sol'kanar like there's no tomorrow. I recur Foggy Spike over and over, but he keeps getting destroyed, poor little bastard. Luckily for me, ppl had to tap out to kill him, and I'm able to bring him back repeatedly. Luckily, I'd managed to play Survival of the Fittest pretty early, but I had little action (lotsa lands, not many critters). I did manage to get some recursion in there, and a late Karador helped a lot. Genesis helped with the Foggy Spike action, even though I seldom got to use him (he died quickly every time I brought him back). But I'm still hangin on by a thread. Sol'kanar Earthquakes me down to 2. Ouchie! Visara's turn. I'm dead. But he swings at Sol'kanar. Takes him out. Holy shit! A-Hole Bro draws and does nothing! Holy shit again! I untap, grab red Akroma from A-Hole Bro's yard (thanks to Debtor's Knell), play Foggy again (damn!), and pray. I think I eat a bunch of stuff from A-Hole Bro's yard to gain some life ( Scavenging Ooze), putting me to 8. Visara plays something that makes everybody discard 3 cards (can't remember name). My upkeep, I grab Malfegor from A-Hole Bro's yard, discarding 3 cards. All of Visara's guys are gone, as well as A-Hole's. Sol'kanar was dead at this point, thanks to Visara (who elected to kill him instead of me...). I kill Visara with A-Hole's dudes, and then swing in with the same dudes to kill A-Hole Bro when it rolls back around to me. And Karador lucksacks win #2! Came back from 2 life. I'm invincible! Karador: 2 - 0 Bring it... EDIT: Also, Mr. Henry is fucking awesome. I gave A-Hole Bro the deck to play against my Underworld Dreams deck - I stood no chance. I played my Pirate deck against it - no chance. TGL played it against Pirates; not even close. Mr. Henry is the man and he'll remain the hardest ever....

Karador, still awesome. And now hated... Don't remember game 1 too well. Remember participants (me with Karador, scaro with Child of Alara, A-Hole Bro with Xira Arien, rms with...a white angel that says enemy critters can't use activated abilities [I can see her, but I cannot for the life of me remember the name..oh wait, Gatherer, Linvala], Evergirl with Kaalia of the Vast, TGL with Visara, and redshirt with Sol-Kanar), but don't remember exact sequence of events. Couple things that stood out, Child got out a Marit Lage quasi-early thanks to a vampire that removes counters, but Kaalia exiled it (whew; and upon later discussion, turns out that everybody but me had a way to deal with that thing in their hand). I was sitting close to Child, Sol-Kanar, and Xira, so I wasn't real aware of what was going on with the others in the game; Sol-Kanar seemed to be focusing on them, Xira wasn't doing much, and I knew that Child was building for some broken combo ( Some Enchanted Evening and a dude that steals all enchantments when he hits the 'yard - and although I had a Doom Blade in hand, that doesn't remove shit from the game - needed that Swords and fast!). I had been getting a little degenerate with the reanimation shenanigans, but after watching Child tutor for his pieces, I decided to hold back a little so that I might have a chance to make a comeback when the combo hit, but I didn't have much hope. Luckily, he never got enough mana to play the combo (and scaro, if I've told you once I've told you a thousand times: mo', mo', mo' mana!). Once he got killed (can't remember who), I unleashed the hounds, recurring critters like crazy. And, I forgot to mention, my graveyard had been eliminated not once but twice (jerks!). Yeah, I whined about it (and I apologized then, and I apologize now - but in all honesty, the whining was half politics, half making fun of another Magic player we know, and half kinda almost serious [it really was irritating]). IIRC, Karador had 6 pay-2-more-cause-you-died tokens on him (total cmc 20... ). No matter, he was born to live forever more! Karmic Guide was involved, as was bad mella fella Vish Kal, and a token generator or two. I got up to 80 some life and I think I won the game with a Squallmonger. Game 2 scaro and rms switched decks (Saffi and 5-color dragon respectively), the rest of us kept our previous ones. I foolishly kept a land heavy hand (5 lands in hand, won the roll, drew another land, and then another on turn two...with Sakura Tribe Elder in hand...). scaro's deck was an enchantress deck (a really cool one too, I want to build one now!), and he had an enchantment that let him put a 4/4 angel in play whenever he played an enchantment. He declared that he and I were now in a token race - most tokens wins. Oh, hell no! It's on! I got out the Best Fatty Ever and we're off! Honestly, this game, scaro and I started out trying to just ignore everyone else and run our race. We minded our own business. I know I wasn't paying much attention to the rest of the game, anyway. We behaved, for Cripe's Sake! But for some reason, I guess that when you get a 20/20 flying indestructible thing in play, and/or you win the previous game, you just can't fade into the background. They were gunning for us; or well, they were gunning for me, anyway. Crud. Fine. I can run the token race and defend myself at the same time. I think I panicked, though; Visara got out an early Coffin Queen and a Haunted Crossroads. Man, seriously? Shit, gonna have to find a Swords to kill it. Can't remember the exact sequence of events, but I kind of forgot about Coffin Queen in the course of running token race and defending myself. I cast Buried Alive, and then realized my error. Oops, guess I gotta kill Queen. I do so with Pernicious Deed, and I almost Jedi mind tricked TGL into forgetting to regen his Mortivore - his 25/25 Mortivore. Shit. Turn rolls around to Visara, he swings with his monster, I go to 5. Ouchie. I proceed to go into "don't look at me" mode. I don't think I'm successful as I still have to defend myself from unwarranted and completely prejudicial attacks. Luckily, Karador sticks around for awhile and I'm able to recur my Foggy Spike, Karmic Guide, and Verdant Force. Stayin' alive! For now. In the process, I also manage to win the token race - 18, bitches, woohoo! Until Kaalia played something that dealt 3 dmg to all green and/or white critters. So I'm floating around 5 life forever, drawing cards, helping keep the game under control. I slowly start to realize that with careful play I can win this game. Y'see, I have a combo! Gleancrawler + Loxodon Hierarch + Magus of the Disk. Oh, oh, oh! Unfortunately, fricken Visara plays Yawg's Will, playing a bunch of shit including a rat bomb. FFFUUUUUUU-----!!! He only has 4 mana available atm, and he glares at me threateningly (and rather cockily, too). (Oh, and just because I strive for accuracy, I'd been put to 2 by a pinger that Xira had [can't remember name], and had then gained 4 more life from the elephant cleric to put me to 6). I decide that I must kill the rats right now. I do so, Visara pops em for 4, and then Xira pings me for three with the thing that I'd completely forgotten about! GAAHH!! I valiantly struggle to find a way to gain 2 life (I can gain one with High Market, why weren't you Miren?!), but I can't. I drag my death out as long as I can, but ultimately fall to fricken pinger damage. Unfortunately for me and redshirt (and TGL who died shortly thereafter, and it serves him right, the rat-bombin' prick), the game dragged on for some time. Xira was next to go (and that serves him right, the pingin' prick!), while rms (damn, just can't remember his general's name) and Kaalia built up rather scary armies. Saffi meanwhile built himself a cozy little fortress and hid there (enchantments/critters that cumulatively read "can't target my enchantments, can't target my critters, can't target me"). Saffi tried to win with Test of Endurance, but couldn't quite hit 50 life, so he decided to just swing with critters; one big one at rms, and many big angels at Kaalia. Karador: 3 - 1 Not sure what I would change in Karador. I'm not sure if I like Graveborn Muse, but I don't know what I'd replace her with. Should prolly play it some more and see if I can form an opinion one way or the other. Also, I don't think I like the karoo lands. Maybe a Strip, a Waste, and a City of Brass? Shit, maybe just basics. Dunno, will have to think about that. I think I've decided that I love this deck. It seems to perfectly fit my style: I can do lots of really cool shit, but there are no instant win combos, and I have to think about what I'm doing most of the time (the deck doesn't play itself, which is boring and usually sucks). I play some powerful shit, but nothing too degenerate. IMO, anyway. I think it's a good solid deck. And it's fun as all hell! Before everybody showed up to play EDH, I played against scaro's 12Post deck. Nasty. Got me thinking, can I build a Modern format deck with shit I have and/or cheap stuff? I think so. And it might actually have some game. Well, prolly not. I'm thinking some sort of MWC, or mostly MWC, anyway. Mostly commons, uncommons, and "crap" rares. Might talk about it more later when I have more energy - it's late! EDIT: For metal that nobody but me and TGL will appreciate... (And RIP, Mr. Columbus. You will be missed.) EDIT 2: Oh, I found something that should be in here - Martyr's Bond. Yikes, it's like Grave Pact, but better. I like the Butcher too much to get rid of him, but Martyr's Bond needs to go in this deck!

Karador helps beat the Archenemy and then wins the free for all, taking out mono-white (Linvala), along with Xira, Visara, Sol-Kanar, and Elf-Guy (can't remember name). My Vish-Kal got to 32/32 at one point, and I ended the game at 146 life (or so). Broken? No. Dominant? Aw yeah!
And now, by popular demand (err, quasi-popular demand), the list: Critters: Bombs: Teneb, the Harvester Butcher of Malakir Deranged Hermit Grave-Shell Scarab Verdant Force Squallmonger Vish-Kal, Blood Arbiter (oh yeah!) Yosei, the Morning Star (can I get an Amen!) Loxodon Hierarch Kill Yer Shit: Shriekmaw Magus of the Disk Acidic Slime Mold Shambler Bone Shredder Get My Shit Back: Genesis Reveillark Eternal Witness Gleancrawler Karmic Guide Draw/Ramp: Wall of Blossoms Phyrexian Rager Graveborn Muse Krosan Tusker Undead Gladiator Eternal Dragon Sakura-Tribe Elder Farhaven Elf Yavimaya Elder Utility: Scavenging Ooze Withered Wretch Spike Weaver Non-Creature: Mana/Ramp: Darksteel Ingot Mirari's Wake Sol Ring Cultivate Kodama's Reach Skyshroud Claim Tutor: Tooth and Nail Buried Alive Demonic Tutor Vampiric Tutor Survival of the Fittest Eladamri's Call Defense of the Heart Diabolic Intent Draw-Fixing: Scroll Rack Sylvan Library Sensei's Divining Top Reanimation: Debtor's Knell Regrowth Killin' Yer Shit Some More: Putrefy Mortify Pernicious Deed Rend Flesh Oblivion Stone Wrath of God Day of Judgement Swords to Plowshares Doomblade Good Stuff: Lightning Greaves Land: 39 or so land

Cool.
I played my 'Marvel Universe' deck tonight against 4 other players. It made it to second place. WOW. It was a little tough, one of the guys had a Grave Pact in play and kept having everyone sac our creatures.
I had originally planned on using Horde of Notions because of all of the 'mutant' looking creatures, but I left it at home and forced myself to notice that another card fits perfectly as the General...Progenitus. It's a picture of a Hydra. Which is one of the evil groups the Avengers usually fight. So that's the one I used tonight.

I still think you should try to focus exclusively on X-Men, but glad to hear the deck worked! And it's easy for me to say "focus on X-Men," especially considering that I'm having a hell of a time finding stuff besides just B and W cards for the Karona cleric deck. I've found a couple non BW clerics, but I guess I'm gonna have to really dig/stretch for stuff in RUG. I also think I'm going to have to break my non-proxy rule - this deck DEMANDS a Preacher, and I don't own one...

EDH Two-headed Giant tournament report
Meet Rms at Hy-Vee for some breakfast. Omelets are awesome. Made it over to the fairgrounds by 10:30ish. We got registered and I started going through the decks to make sure we were legal. Twenty-two people showed up for the event so we had eleven teams.
Round 1- Our opponents were from Columbia, really competitive guys. Not sure of names, not sure of generals. We crushed them turn three. 1-0
Round 2- One of the guys 2nd round was from Jeff City, going to school in Kirksville. His friend from school was from some place near St Louis. Cool guys. Not sure of names, not sure of generals. We defeated them 3rd turn. 2-0
Round 3- Not sure where they were from, never seen them before. Obviously from out of town, friendly guys though. Not sure of names, not sure of generals. Roflol stomped them 3rd turn. When I flipped my library into my graveyard one guy said “What just happen?” and after I went through the combo with them he got on his phone. He said he had to call some one and tell them about this, he was really excited about it. 3-0
Went home for a soda after this round, we had almost an hour between rounds. When I got back Sunshine had Narcomoebas and Dread Returns laying on the dealer table for sale. I smiled to myself and ignored it.
OMFG! That was the first time I have ever spelled out Narcomoeba! It is an anagram for (combo arena) or (A Near Combo) or the one I like best (Earn a Combo). anyway
Round 4- A couple from Moberly, really cool and she was hot. They were into nerdcore and told us about a concert coming up. Not sure of names, not sure of generals. We pwned them 4th turn. 4-0
Simi-finals- Our 1st, 3rd and 4th round opponents made the finales. We played the couple from 4th round. still not sure of names, still not sure of generals. Destroyed them 3rd turn. 5-0
Finals- We played the dudes from 1st round. One of them mulligan to one card trying to find a Force or a Pithing Needle. He didn’t find it and they conceded on turn two when I played the hermit. 6-0
I mulligan till I found worldly, sylvan, vampiric, imperial or the Hermit himself ever round. I guess round four I kept a hand with Eladamri’s call, that’s why that game went long. RMS got a lot of practice mulligan. He always had a counter, usually two with the second being a daze or force. It was a really fun tournament, well fun for me anyway.

Hmm, something just isn't right when a 4th turn win is the game "going long." Graz'zt on the win! Watching a hundred card singleton deck win on turn 3 the other night was, well, as you said, "fun for you." Pretty cool what all the stuff did, though, and pretty amazing that it was so consistent. I'm not a combo boy, though, so maybe that's why I'm amazed. Now never play that deck against me again!! Was most everybody playing combo? Seems like with the ease (I assume it should be easy) that one can break this format, that most everybody would be playing combo of some sort. Or at least have the weapons to fight it. Or roll like you and RMS did (one combo, one draw-go). I was at first irritated that you couldn't remember any names or generals, but when you're winning on turn 3, that shit don't really matter, heh! Again, good job, and ty for the report. Looking forward to playing against you guys again!

We never really got to see any ones deck, so not sure what they were playing. One guy showed RMS his deck, mostly dragons ...... mostly. The guys from Columbia said one of there decks was combo but no one ever really played any thing against us. They allso said if they had the cards they would have played my deck.
